What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, an abundant chemical in the cannabis plant. Unlike its more famous cannabinoid cousin, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is non-psychoactive. Since cannabidiol does not cause psychoactive effects, it is an excellent option for people seeking the benefits of cannabis products without the high.

CBD products containing less than 0.3% THC are derived from industrial hemp plants, which became federally legal for cultivation by state authorized institutions after the 2014 Farm Bill was signed.

Additional Medical Benefits

In June 2018 the Food and Drug Administration approved a cannabidiol-based drug called Epidiolex as a treatment for severe forms of epilepsy, representing the first government-sanctioned medical use for CBD.

Preliminary research also indicates that CBD may be effective as an antipsychotic in reducing some symtoms with fewer side effects compared with current antipsychotic drugs. CBD has also shown promise to reduce cravings among people addicted to opioids.

Is CBD Legal?

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 removes hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) from Schedule I controlled substances making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. It’s provisions were incorporated in the 2018 United States farm bill that became law on December 20, 2018.

Because CBD from hemp has no psychoactive effects, the purchase, sales, or possession of hemp CBD products are completely legal in almost all States. Because hemp is sometimes confused with the marijuana plant, there is still some stigma towards hemp-derived CBD, but from a legal perspective, hemp-derived CBD is completely legal and enjoys the rights of any other legal product.
